Check Out My New Online Courses For New eLearning Designers!

Last year, when I published The eLearning Designer’s Handbook, I decided at the last minute (about a week before the book went live 😬) to build a companion online course: Getting Started with The eLearning Development Process. While the decision to build this online course was totally spontaneous, I knew it was something that I eventually wanted to do longterm: to design and offer online courses for new eLearning designers.

The truth is, that first course was really a pilot to see if I could actually design and release an online course in the first place! As I built and launched that first online course, I was on a bit of a journey for me, where I was seeking to answer some basic questions…

  • Did I have enough content to build an entire online course?
  • Did I have the technical ability to host an online course?
  • Could I market and sell an online course?
  • Would people be willing to pay for my online course?
  • Could I expand this into other online courses for new eLearning designers?

The good news is that I quickly discovered the answer to all of these questions was a big YES! Yes, I did have the ability to design an online course that would appeal to a large number of people. Yes, I could market and sell my online course to my audience. Yes, I could expand my topics of online courses for new eLearning designers!

So, over the last several months and weeks, I’ve been quietly working to design a brand new, scalable platform, letting me design and sell my online courses, which I am calling The eLearning Designer’s Academy. And that’s what I wanted to share with you today! πŸ˜ƒπŸŽ‰

What Online Courses Will Be Available?

Gosh, this is a hard question to answer! As I’ve been working to build the platform to design, sell, and manage my online courses, I’ve been keeping a long list of courses I’d like to build. While I’d love to be able to offer all of my courses at launch, I’ll be launching The eLearning Designer’s Academy with three initial courses:

  • Getting Started with The eLearning Development Process
  • Getting Started with Articulate Storyline
  • Building Advanced Interactions with Articulate Storyline

In addition to my existing online course, the two Articulate Storyline courses will be my newest offerings. This was an easy decision for me, as I already had the content and practice files for these courses, I just need to convert them into an online course.

Now, as for future courses, I have an extensive backlog of courses that I’ll be working to release in the future. While this isn’t a complete list, future courses will include…

  • Instructional Design for eLearning
  • Storyboarding for eLearning
  • Visual Design for eLearning
  • Designing Scenario-Based eLearning
  • Building Your Online eLearning Portfolio
  • Becoming a Freelance eLearning Designer
  • PowerPoint for Graphic Design
  • Getting Started with Camtasia
  • Creating Motion Graphics with Camtasia
  • Designing Micro-eLearning
  • Gamification for eLearning
  • And Much More!

How Much Will My Online Courses Cost?

This is another hard question to answer! When I launched my first online course, I landed on a price of $199.99. I felt this was a fair price for the quality and quantity of content folks would receive. I also felt it was a fair price for the amount of work I put into creating the course.

For The eLearning Designer’s Academy, I thought about going with a subscription-based model, which would allow folks to pay a monthly or annual fee to have access to my courses. However, to be honest, I really hated the idea of adding another monthly or annual bill to anyone’s budget.

Instead, I decided to go with a flat price for each individual course. This means that you only pay once to get the course, and after that it’s yours! No monthly fees, no confusing subscriptions, and no unexpected charges to your credit card.

As for the actual pricing for my new online courses, I’m still working on the details. My plan is to price each course individually, according to the amount of content it contains. I also plan to offer course bundles and group rates, letting you purchase multiple courses or licenses at a discounted rate.

When Will My Online Courses Be Available?

Well, I’m not 100% sure when I’ll be ready to launch The eLearning Designer’s Academy. As of right now, I’m still busy finishing up the two Articulate Storyline courses and configuring the overall platform.

As of right now, my hope is that it’ll all be ready to launch within the next 30 days! 😁

  • Hi Tim,

Will your courses be synchronous or asynchronous? Just wondering because I learn better from a blended style of synchronous, live sessions together as a class via webinar combined with some asynchronous, self-paced learning thrown in. I think the blended learning will be helpful for many people who aren’t as sure or confident venturing into something new. Just a thought!

    • Hi May! Thanks for commenting. The courses will be 100% asynchronous, but I am also looking at how I can create synchronous solutions as well in the future. For example, I’ll have a self-paced course on Articulate Storyline, but may offer a virtual, synchronous session on a regular basis for folks to attend and get additional content. I hope that makes sense!

  • Tim, do you discuss how to source voice over talent for your E-learning projects during your course? I am sure you agree that having audio and visuals that are interesting increase the value of any E-Learning project.

  • Hi Tim,

What LMS platform will you be using to delivery your future courses? I assume they will be created in Storyline but how will you deliver them?

    Thank you,

    • Hi Richard. Great question. I’m using the Thinkific platform for everything, including course authoring. Check it out!
