How to Create a Custom eLearning Color Scheme

Selecting colors and creating an eLearning color scheme is a struggle many eLearning designers face on a regular basis. In addition to selecting and using fonts and images, a color scheme can strongly influence the overall look and feel of your course. Designing a visually-pleasing eLearning course, or creating a design that matches specific branding standards, requires a careful balance for how colors are used throughout your content.

While it can be a struggle to create a custom eLearning color scheme, it’s much easier to use tools that will do the work for you! Here are three tools that will help you create a custom eLearning color scheme.

Adobe Color CC

Adobe Color (previously known as Adobe Kuler) has been around for many years and is a go-to tool for all types of designers. With Adobe Color, you can create and save a custom color scheme in a few easy clicks. You can also explore and modify color schemes created and shared by other designers.

Perhaps the best feature of Adobe Color is the option to create a color scheme by uploading a photo. When you upload a photo to Adobe Color, it analyzes the image and creates a color scheme based on the different colors it finds.

Flat UI Colors is a very minimalistic website, with a specific set of colors to choose from. Although Flat UI Colors doesn’t necessarily offer the ability to create color schemes, it is a great resource for finding modern-looking colors.

I love Flat UI Colors for its simpleness and for its selection of colors that look clean and fresh. With Flat UI Colors, less really is more!

Material Design Color Palette is very similar to Flat UI Colors, as it offers a small collection of amazing colors. Taking inspiration from Google’s Material Design Standards, Material Design Color Palette makes it easy to mix and match colors to create a custom eLearning color scheme.

I love Material Design Color Palette for how it previews your custom color scheme. After selecting two colors, Material Design Color Palette displays a sample interface with your selected colors.
